The Two Witnesses explained

The Two Witnesses of this prophecy and the 1260 days found in Revelation chapter 11 represent a type of symbolism used throughout the book. Many anxiously await the arrival of these two witnesses described in Revelation 11:3-13. Ah! But, wait they have both been here all along as we shall prove!

Remember our study on Times time and a dividing of time? Well the exact same 1260 years is found in Revelation chapter 11.

Revelation 11:3
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth."

The commonly accepted interpretation of the verse is that the two witnesses are real prophets, perhaps Moses and Elijah. When you understand that the time period does not represent 1260 literal days, but rather 1260 years, it can be seen that it cannot be referring to real people as witnesses. One clue is in the next verse.

Revelation 11:4
"These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth."

The two witnesses are also called two olive trees standing before God. This links us to Zechariah.

Zechariah 4:2-4
2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?

Zechariah sees a candlestick and two olive trees and asks what they represent. Note the answer!

Zechariah 4:5-6
5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

The candlestick and two olive trees are the word of the Lord! So the language used in Revelation 11:4 is prophetic and symbolic, the two witnesses actually representing the word of God, the Old and New Testament, that would "prophesy in sackcloth" or be suppressed during the very same 1260 years of persecution we are considering.

The 42 Months

This same period of persecution is found in the following verses.

Revelation 11:2
"But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months."

Again as in Revelation 12, we have a strong relationship between these 42 months of verse 2 and the 1260 days of Revelation 11: 3. Forty two months calculates as 42 x 30 (30 days in a lunar month) which equals 1260 days/years. This verse is saying that the Gentiles or unbelievers would trample the people of God (the holy city) for 1260 years. Again this same time period of 42 months is found in Revelation 13.

Revelation 13:5-7
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindred's, and tongues, and nations.

This passage speaks of the great and terrible beast from the sea, which actually is the same as the little horn of Daniel, which is to say the Antichrist power that would persecute the people of God for 1260 years. So, here is a complete listing of the passages that deal with the same 1260 year time period of persecution.

listing of the 1260 years passages
3 1/2 Times Revelation 12:14, Daniel 7:25, Daniel 12:7
1260 days Revelation 11:3, Revelation 12:6
42 Months Revelation 11:2, Revelation 13:5

If you know much about what is called the Dark Ages, then you probably know who this persecuting power is already. So now, to find out exactly when this 1260 years is fulfilled, and the real identity of the little horn and beast from the sea in Revelation that persecuted God's people for those 1260 years.

Ok let us review the 2 witnesses again because it can be complicated and requires allot of study.

Revelation 11:3
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth."

Remember according to Zechariah chapter 4 one day is equal to one year when it concerns prophecy. So from this we get 1260 years the two witnesses (Old and New Testament) are clothed in sackcloth. Now once again we will prove who these 2 witnesses are.

Revelation 11:4
"These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth."

Verse 4 tells us who the two witnesses are. So we must ask, what are the 2 olive trees and 2 candlesticks? The vital clue to understanding the 2 witnesses’ prophecy is the period of their witness, the '1260 days' or ‘1260 real years’. Revelation 12:6 also uses this same time period. This common reference to the symbolic period of 1,260 days binds the two witnesses and the woman/child/dragon stories together because the time of thier testimony is the same.
However, Revelation chapters 11 and 12 have more in common than just the period of 1260 years. Requiring the 1260 days mentioned in both these two narratives to represent the same period of time and forces a re-evaluation of the intended meaning of these accounts. Let us compare them.

Matching the structures found in both these accounts we are presented with the following.

Two Witnesses
1 Prophesy 1260 days = Woman in the wilderness 1260 days.
2 Death of Witnesses = Satan descends to the earth.
3 Dead 3.5 times = Other offspring persecuted over a period of a time, times and half a time'.

Before trying to identify the two witnesses we should look briefly at the period of 3.5 times. The term is also found in Daniel 7:25 and Daniel 12:7.

Daniel 7:25
"And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time."

Daniel 12:7
"Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished."

Scripture then provides the following clue to the identity of the two witnesses.

Revelation 11:4
"These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth."

Remember how the symbolism of the two olive trees and two lampstands is encountered before in a slightly different arrangement in the book of Zechariah.

Zechariah 4:2
"And he said to me, "What do you see?" So I said, "I am looking, and there is a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps."

Zechariah: 3
"Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left."

11 Then I answered and said to him, "What are these two olive trees; at the right of the lampstand and at its left?
12 And I further answered and said to him, "What are these two olive branches that drip into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden oil drains?
13 Then he answered me and said, "Do you not know what these are?" And I said, "No, my lord.
14 So he said, "These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.

These passages advise us of something important that the olive oil passes from the olive trees to the lampstand. The oil is the fuel that keeps lampstands flame burning. Now let us consider this verse from Revelation.

Revelation 1:20
"...and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches."

The church representing a lampstand then converts the olive oil it receives into light. This would indicate the olive oil was the inspired word of God brought to us through his chosen men. This also suggests the olive oil is equal to the law and the prophets. Something surprising about this analogy is given when we take notice of what Zachariah tells us. In the Old Testament book of Zechariah we encounter two olive trees, but only one lampstand! This implies the second lampstand (New Testament) was not yet present at his time. This makes sense when in Revelation we see both of them present. Diagraming this we are presented with the following.

Two Olive Trees represent
1 The Law
2 The Prophets

Two Lampstands represent
1 The Old Covenant Church
2 The New Testament Church

Having considered the identity and form of the witnesses we can now reflect upon the period of time symbolically referred to as 1,260 days.

Revelation 11:3
"And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth."

Notice also the woman or his Church is given the same period of torment.

Revelation 12:6
"The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days."

Revelation 13:5
"The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months."

Here again if Revelation 13:5 is compared with Daniel 7:25 to show that 3 ½ times is the same as 42 months, the same as 1260 days. The beast blasphemies and exercises power over the saints of God. Is there any entity that has ruled during such a period? Yes!

10 kingdoms established A.D. 476 -------> A.D. 538 Papal authority Commences at the Justinian decree.

In 1798 Berthier entered Rome on Feb 10, 1798 and proclaimed a republic...
Half of Europe thought Napoleon's veto would be obeyed and with that the Pope and the Papacy was seen as dead as a political force. Ah! But was it really dead or just seemed to be dead?

In 476 AD the Ten kingdoms were established and the ‘little horn’ power ascends. The Ostrogoth's were removed. But it is 62 years later after all opposition is removed that Vigilius ascends the Papal Chair under the military protection of Belisarius upon the Justinian decree. 476 AD + 62 Years = 538 AD which is the beginning point of this ‘little horn’ power or the ‘Anti-Christ’. Now we can add the 1260 years of rule.

Daniel 7:25 was fulfilled
538 AD Bishop officially Recognized (Vigilius ascends the Papal Chair as 1st Pope)
+1260 Years Years of time prophecy = 42 Months x 30 (Biblical Month)
= 1798 AD Daniel 7:25 was fulfilled when the Papacy was "artificially" ended by Napoleon

The mortal Wound Fullfilled
Feb. 21 1798 Pope Pius VI is dethroned by Napoleon. His ring was torn from his finger and he died in exile. The Papacy received a mortal wound.
December 1804 Pope Pius VII witnesses Napoleon crown himself Emperor.
Year 1808 Napoleon takes the Vatican states.

The Saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time.
Time One year or 360 days {Jewish year is 360 days not 365}
Times Two years or 720 days
1/2 Time Half a year or 180 days
+ = 360 + 720 + 180 = 1260 Prophetic days (years)

All of this happens during that period. This is that time the prophecy stretches from 538AD to 1798AD, allegedly a period of papal supremacy when the papacy controlled religion. The papacy hid the Bibles, burned some of them, and killed people who professed to believe in the truth of the Bible and not according to Catholicism.

Did Rome try to suppress the Bible during this period? Well the decree set forth in the year 1229 A.D. by the Council of Valencia places the Bible on The Index of Forbidden Books!

"it is forbidden for laymen (common man) to read the Old and New Testaments. - We forbid them most severely to have the above books in the popular vernacular." "The lords of the districts shall carefully seek out the heretics in dwellings, hovels, and forests, and even their underground retreats shall be entirely wiped out."
Source: Council Tolosanum, Pope Gregory IX Anno. Chr. 1229

Because of the symbolism of the two olive trees and two lampstands and the length of thier testimony. The 2 Witnesses must be the Old and New testaments that give light and witness to the world.
